Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

Application

Ultrasonic testing (UT) can be used for flaw detection/evaluation, dimensional measurements, and material characterization. UT detects both surface and subsurface defects. Our certified technician also uses B-Scan Ultrasound to measure the material thickness of your tank walls at a number of points, documenting the condition of the tank's integrity.

Method

UT uses high-frequency sound energy to take measurements. The sound energy is introduced via a transducer and propagates through the materials in the form of waves. When there is a discontinuity (caused by a crack) in the wave path, part of the energy will be reflected back from the flawed surface. The reflected wave signal is transformed into an electrical signal by the transducer and is displayed or recorded to be interpreted by our technician.
